Summer 2010 - New Archaeology Course
At Phoenix House.
An 8 week, evening course, open to members and non-members.
Covering history of archaeology, how to find archaeological sites, early man & his influence on the landscape, introduction to site working, site investigation, equipment, maps and their uses, boundaries, landscape archaeology, place names, geophysical surveys, death and social division in the ancient world, health and safety in archaeology, the A2, castles, Roman pottery, buildings and ceramics.

Alan Abbey will look at the changes in Sittingbourne as shown by three important and little known historical maps. Starting with the 1590 map of Bayford Court Manor by Sir Christopher Saxton, Alan highlights the town's evolution through to 1791 as shown by Thomas Yeakell and finally the Tithe map of 1841.

John Clancy, writer of many local history books, will be giving his first ever lecture in which he reconsiders the beginnings of Sittingbourne. This talk challenges many of the long held views of the towns origins, looking back into our Saxon and Medieval past to re-examine the evidence and find new answers.

Bryan Clark will talk about the Brickfields of Murston. With a wealth of personal experiences and many photographs of Murston both then and now, he really brings this subject to life.

John and Karen Paul will discuss their study of Grovehurst Farm, Milton. This lecture is not just about the farm but about local history research and how anyone can take on a project no matter what their experience or qualifications.

The paper can be patterned, embossed and include leaves, flowers and threads. The class will take place at the museum, in St Faith's Street, Maidstone. It is suitable for people aged over 16.

You need to bring a large tray to carry the wet paper home and any threads and old pot pourri for decorating.

This class is in the January Sale at just £5 per ticket across the board. There is a maximum of 15 places, to reserve your place call 01622 602838.
